The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has approved a range of Photo Dynamic Therapy (PDT) treatments and photosensitisers:
- Head and neck (using the photosensitiser Foscan)
- Advanced cancer of the bronchus for palliation
- Early cancer of the oesophagus
- Barrett’s oesophagus
- Dermatology
- Macular degeneration
- Localised inoperable endo-bronchial cancer is under review
However, PDT isn’t suitable in all cases. Each patient needs to be carefully evaluated prior to treatment.
Professor Moghissi has been recognised by NICE for his unrivalled experience and expertise in this area and has been appointed to their specialist committee for PDT.
PCTs
PCTs are encouraged to support PDT treatments as approved by NICE. The Centre can offer support and training. PCTs can fund patients for treatment at the Centre within Goole & District Hospital, or make arrangements for the Mobile Unit to provide the service within their own hospital facilities.
