   We are investigating the use of our newest treatment, Daylight Photo Dynamic Therapy, within Health Centres in and around the region.                             

 

Treatments Available via our mobile service

 PhotoDynamic Therapy

 

Also known as PDT, this treatment has many modalities. The principle of PDT is that malignant tissue is photosensitised either systemically (via an injection), or topically (using a cream). After a preset amount of time has elapsed, which is dependent on the photosensitiser that has been used; the treatment area is then exposed to a specific wavelength of light (632nm). The interaction between the light (which on its’ own has no effect) and the photosensitiser causes a chemical reaction in the cancerous cells causing them to break down. Healthy tissues remain unaffected as they are able to excrete the photosensitiser prior to treatment commencing.

 

The mobile unit currently offers PDT as a treatment option in;

  •         Bronchus 
  •        Oesophagus 
  •        Gynaecology (VIN & VAIN) 
  •        Urinary Tract 
  •        Dermatology 
  •        Colo-rectal / General surgery 

 Endopyelotomy

 This is the treatment of a condition where the ureter (the pathway between the Kidneys & Bladder becomes restricted making the passing of Urine difficult or impossible.

 An adjustable power, Thermal Diode laser – the D60 - is used to delicately burn away the blocking tissue and free the Ureter.

  Gynaecology

  •  Bowen’s Disease and Padgett’s Disease
  •  VIN III / VaIN
  •  Vulval / Vaginal intra-epithelial neoplasia is a pre-cancerous condition which responds well to PDT. Depending on the affected area patients are photosensitised with either a topical cream (more common) or systemically.

 Miscellaneous

 The YLC has been able to use a D60 Thermal laser for ablation in some Gynaecological applications. The adjustable power and shallow penetration of this laser makes it ideal for such procedures.

 Tumour Ablation

This has applications on a wide range of tumours ranging from Gastric, topical skin tumours, Thoracic et cetera.

Our mobile service has been in use for over 15 years. We can offer a variety of laser equipment for use in a number of treatment specialities. Our biggest use is in the area of Photodynamic Therapy, both with the use of Photofrin and also topical photosensitisers.

Who are we?

The Yorkshire Laser Centre is an independent company Limited by Guarantee (reg no:3547276). Its pioneering work and leadership within the British Medical Laser Association (BMLA) and the European Platform for Photodynamic Medicine (EPPM) has earned it a significant international reputation.

A growing number of associate Honorary Consultants work with the Centre to develop research and treatment within a wide range of medical disciplines such as dermatology, gynaecology, urology, orthopaedics, colo-rectal, oral, maxillo-facial and general surgery.

The Photodynamic Symposium at the Royal Society of Medicine, London, UK, organised by the RSM Professionals and the UK PDT Charitable Trust, has become an important fixture in the calendar of events at the RSM.

PDT is neither part of any of the Section of that illustrious establishment nor structurally is affiliated to one. However the symposium has been filling a gap within the education programme of the RSM.

Enormous thanks must go to all who presented at this year’s PDT symposium, helping to make it even more of a success than in previous years.

The programme served to demonstrate how the interaction between lab and clinical work can offer patients the newest, and ever improving, technologies and treatments. It truly underlined how inter-departmental co-operation works for the benefit of the patient.

Beginning with some ‘basics of PDT’, presenters from the UK and Switzerland demonstrated innovative aspects of mechanisms, dosimetry and enhancers. Following this were some exciting and thought provoking ideas about the use of PDT in micro-biology and the morning closed with work on the newest and the most unusual applications of PDT in Dermatology.

The afternoon brought us Imaging and Image Guided Surgery in oncology, followed by PDT in Lung Cancer and in Head and Neck.

The day rounded off with the Research in Progress; the PEARL trial and work on ABCG2 as a mechanism of resistance to PDT in 3D models of colo-rectal cancer.

The in-programme discussions were animated and far-reaching; the interest that had been aroused was palpable & All told, an educational and inspiring programme.
